What is petroleum resin?
Petroleum resin is a kind of thermoplastic resin produced by pretreatment, polymerization, distillation and other processes by using C5/C9 fractions as by-products in the process of petroleum cracking as raw materials. Petroleum resin has the characteristics of good viscosity adjustment and thermal stability, and its main function is to provide viscosity increasing and wetting effects. Petroleum resins are generally not used alone but are used together as accelerators, regulators, modifiers and other resins. Petroleum resins are classified into C5 petroleum resins, c9 petroleum resins, c5/c9 copolymerized petroleum resins and hydrogenated petroleum resins according to different raw materials. Different types of petroleum resins have certain interoperability and can be substituted for each other in some fields, but they also have their own uniqueness in various application fields.
C5 petroleum resins
What is C5 petroleum resin?
C5 petroleum resin, also known as C5 resin and aliphatic hydrocarbon resin, is divided into three types: general-purpose type, harmonious type, and primary color transparent type. Light yellow or light brown flake or granular solid, relative density 0.97-1.07. Softening point 70~140. Refractive index 1.512. Soluble in acetone. Methyl ethyl ketone, ethyl acetate, trichloroethane, cyclohexane, toluene, solvent gasoline, etc. It has good tackifying properties, heat resistance, stability, water resistance, acid, and alkali resistance, and its tackifying effect is generally better than that of C9 resin. It has good compatibility with phenolic resin, terpene resin, coumarone resin, natural rubber, synthetic rubber, etc., especially with styrene-butadiene rubber. Combustible. Nontoxic.
The characteristics of C5 petroleum resin
C5 petroleum resin began to replace natural resin adhesives (rosin and terpene resins) gradually due to its high peel bonding strength, good quick adhesion, stable bonding performance, moderate melting viscosity, good heat resistance, and good compatibility with polymer matrix.
The characteristics of refined C5 petroleum resin in hot melt adhesives: good fluidity, can improve the wettability of the main material, good viscosity, and outstanding initial tack performance. Excellent anti-aging properties, light color, transparency, low odor, low volatiles.
C5 petroleum resin is mainly used as tackifying resin for pressure-sensitive adhesive, hot-melt pressure-sensitive adhesive, hot-melt adhesive and rubber-type adhesive.
C9 petroleum resin
What is C9 petroleum resin?
C9 petroleum resin specifically refers to a resinous substance obtained by “polymerizing olefins or cyclic olefins or copolymerizing with aldehydes, aromatic hydrocarbons, terpenes, etc.” containing nine carbon atoms.
C9 petroleum resin, also known as aromatic hydrocarbon resin, is divided into thermal polymerization, cold polymerization, tar and other types. Among them, cold polymerization products are light in color and good in quality, with an average molecular weight of 2000~5000. Light yellow to light brown flakes, granules or blocks Solid, transparent and shiny, relative density 0.97~1.04. The softening point is 80~140℃. The glass transition temperature is 81°C. Refractive index 1.512. Flashpoint 260 ℃. Acid value 0.1~1.0. The iodine value is 30~120.
The characteristics of C9 petroleum resin
C9 petroleum resin is soluble in acetone, methyl ethyl ketone, cyclohexane, dichloromethane, ethyl acetate, toluene, gasoline, etc. Insoluble in ethanol and water. It has a cyclic structure, contains some double bonds, and has strong cohesion. There are no polar or functional groups in the molecular structure and no chemical activity. Good acid and alkali resistance, chemical resistance and water resistance. Poor adhesion, brittleness, poor aging resistance, not suitable for use alone. Good compatibility with phenolic resin, coumarone resin, terpene resin, SBR, SIS.
C9 petroleum resin: high softening point, deep color, high degree of unsaturation, good weather resistance, poor compatibility with rubber, SIS, etc. Mainly used in paint, ink and other fields, also in hot melt adhesive, road marking paint, rubber and other fields.
Thermopolymer is mainly used in adhesives, rubber, radial tires and other industries.
Cold polymerization is mainly used for paints, inks, and adhesives.
C9 Petroleum Resin Uses:
1. Coatings: Petroleum resins can be mixed with various drying oils to produce paints, and various resins and pigments can be mixed to produce paints of various colors, which are widely used on the surfaces of vehicles, ships and bridges. It greatly improves the gloss, hardness, water and alkali resistance of the paint film, and reduces the production cost.
2. Rubber: Petroleum resin is suitable as an additive for natural and synthetic rubber, which can improve the molding operation and increase the hardness and elasticity of the product. Due to improving the strength and aging resistance of rubber, this resin is especially suitable for softening SBR rubber for the production of rubber pipes, V-belts and tires.
3. Adhesive: Petroleum resin has good adhesion and is a good tackifier in adhesives and pressure-sensitive tapes. Adhesives for the production of plywood, wallpaper, and leather improve the water resistance of the adhesive. Because of its small shrinkage during solidification, it can be used in the foundry industry.
4. Ink: Petroleum resin has water resistance, melting resistance and drying resistance. Adding petroleum resin to ink can play the role of color development, quick-drying, brightening, and improving printing performance, so various printing inks can be made.
Summarize
C5/C9 Copolymerized Petroleum Resin:
It has the characteristics of C5/C9 petroleum resin, the softening point is relatively high, and the compatibility is relatively good. It is mainly used in hot melt adhesive, synthetic rubber, tires and other fields.
Hydrogenated petroleum resin:
Low unsaturation, colorless, no special odor, good weather resistance, stability and compatibility. Mainly used in high-grade coatings, color inks, adhesives, road marking paint and other industries.
The hydrogenated petroleum resin saturates the original double bond and benzene ring, and removes the residual halide, sulfur and nitrogen impurities in the resin polymerization process. After hydrogenation, it can become white or transparent. Transparency is very important in applications such as hot melt adhesives, adhesives and PP film modifiers. In addition, hydrogenation can also improve adhesion, weather resistance and use in hot melt. Compatibility of glue with EVA. Therefore, hydrogenated petroleum resins are widely used in hot melt adhesives, adhesives for diapers and sanitary products, new coatings, inks, highway road marking paints and other fields.
To sum up
C5 petroleum resin has a low softening point, low odor and high adhesion, and is mainly used in pressure-sensitive adhesives, hot melt adhesives, road marking paints and other fields. C9 petroleum resin has a relatively large odor, high softening point and poor compatibility. It is mainly used in paints, inks and anti-corrosion coatings.
